Saisiyat ceremony at Xiangtian Lake ยท likely ~Nov 22โ€“24, 2026 (TBC)
โš ๏ธ Dates not official yet
Saisiyat elders set the dates, and they're usually announced in late October. The working estimate comes from the lunar calendar: Nanzhuang's public nights began Nov 14 in 2024 (lunar 10/14), and lunar 10/14 in 2026 falls on Sun Nov 22. The ceremony is held every 2 years, with a grand edition every 10, so 2026 should be a grand year. Confirm both before locking anything that's non-refundable.
๐Ÿ“– What it is

Pas-ta'ay is the most important ritual of the Saisiyat, one of Taiwan's smallest Indigenous peoples. In the oral history, a race of short people (the ta'ay) taught the Saisiyat farming, songs and dance. A conflict ended with the ta'ay wiped out, and they left a curse behind. The ceremony honors, appeases and finally sends off their spirits.

The full rite lasts about 6 days. The first two are closed to outsiders. Then come three public nights of circle dancing from dusk to dawn: long lines holding hands, chanting songs that are only sung at this ceremony, with the rhythm set by hip-bells (่‡€้ˆด) and tall decorated banners (่‚ฉๆ——). Once you're in the line, you don't let go of your neighbors' hands. It's solemn and hypnotic, not a show put on for tourists.

It's held at two sites. The southern group is at Xiangtian Lake, Nanzhuang (Miaoli), which is more accessible and has had a 24-hour shuttle in past years. The northern group is at Da'ai, Wufeng (Hsinchu), which is remote: no shuttle and a car ban in 2024. โ†’ Go Nanzhuang.

Location
In Nanzhuang town on the main road, close to the Old Street and Yongchang Temple. The lake is roughly 25โ€“30 min up the mountain by car (estimate)
Ask the host
(1) late return around 2โ€“4 am, and whether there's a door code; (2) whether they can arrange a taxi or driver to and from the lake; (3) the festival shuttle times this year; (4) a late checkout on Nov 23 (standard is 11:00)
If dates shift
If the main public night turns out to be Nov 21 or Nov 23, change the dates in Agoda before Nov 15
๐Ÿ’ค All-nighter? Do a partial one
Dance from dusk until about 2โ€“4 am, or stay to dawn if it grabs you, then sleep in. One overnight in Nanzhuang lets you do the night properly and make the Water Official temple the next morning without driving or flying on no sleep.
๐Ÿš† Getting there from Taipei
A ยท HSR + taxi
HSR Taipei โ†’ Miaoli (~50 min), then a taxi to Nanzhuang (~40 min). The fastest option
B ยท Train + bus
TRA to Zhunan, then the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Nanzhuang line (ๅฐ็ฃๅฅฝ่กŒๅ—ๅบ„็ทš) to town. During the festival, Miaoli Bus has run 24-hour service up to the lake (routes 5822/5824 in past years). Confirm on 037-662-111
C ยท Driver
A private driver for Nov 22โ€“23 (Taipei โ†’ Nanzhuang โ†’ lake run โ†’ Hukou โ†’ Taipei). Most flexible, and no 3 am taxi hunt
At the lake
Expect road closures near Xiangtian Lake during the ceremony. Use the shuttle or have a driver drop you off. Don't count on finding a taxi in the small hours. If you drink the millet wine, don't drive

๐Ÿ™ Etiquette & taboos
  • Silvergrass on, for you and your gear, before entering the grounds
  • Never let go of hands once you're in a dance line
  • No arguing, shouting or horseplay; it's considered to anger the spirits
  • No flash. Keep photos respectful, and ask before close-up portraits
  • Pregnant women traditionally stay away from the grounds
  • Don't touch the ritual banners or hip-bells. Follow the hosts' lead on everything
๐ŸŽ’ Pack

The lake sits at ~740 m, and late-November nights there run ~10ยฐC, often foggy or drizzly. Bring a warm layer + rain shell, comfortable shoes for hours of slow stepping, a headlamp, a power bank, cash (fee, food stalls, taxi), and a dark, plain outfit.

๐Ÿ›• Next morning: the Water Official (Mon Nov 23, Xia Yuan ไธ‹ๅ…ƒ็ฏ€)
Nanzhuang Yongchang Temple ๆฐธๆ˜Œๅฎฎ
Main deity: the Three Officials (ไธ‰ๅฎ˜ๅคงๅธ, the Hakka "ไธ‰็•Œ็ˆบ"). Built 1905, rebuilt after the 1935 earthquake. On the Old Street, a short walk from the homestay. ๐Ÿ“ Map
Hukou Sanyuan Temple ๆน–ๅฃไธ‰ๅ…ƒๅฎฎ โญ
Main deity: the Three Officials. Built 1910โ€“1918, a county historic site with fine stone and wood carving, and it holds Water Official rites. On Hukou Old Street, right on the way back to Taipei. ๐Ÿ“ Map

How it works: offer incense in the morning and ask the Water Official to "่งฃๅŽ„" (lift misfortune). Simple offerings of fruit and sweets are fine, and many temples sell prepared sets.
